Local Officials detail Houston’s future in 6th Annual State of The City Forum
Added: 09/09/2008 - Kelly King

Houston, TX—The Houston Area Urban League Young Professionals (HAULYP) will host its much anticipated 6th Annual State of the City Forum (SOTC) and reception Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 6:30 PM. The event will be held at Texas Southern University’s Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs. Houston’s city officials, community leaders, professionals and general public have been invited to join enlightening discussion on how Houston’s young professionals can get involved in planning Houston’s future.

HAULYP welcomes KRIV Fox 26 anchor Isiah Carey as this year’s forum moderator as well as panelists Anne Clutterbuck (City Council, District C); Peter Brown (City Council, At-Large Position 1); Craig Richard (Sr. Vice President, Greater Houston Partnership); Velma Laws (Director, City of Houston Mayor's Office of Affirmative Action and Contract Compliance); and Marlene Gafrick (Director of City of Houston Planning and Development Department).

This year’s forum presents local officials with questions extracted from nearly 200 of HAULYP’s current members covering issues related to attaining Minority Contracts, planning and development, and the infrastructure of the City of Houston.

Panelists will also address issues related to the National Urban League's (NUL) Five Point Agenda of Economic Empowerment; Education and Youth Leadership Empowerment; Civic Engagement Empowerment; Health and Quality of Life Empowerment, and Civil Rights and Racial Justice Empowerment.

The SOTC was established five years ago as an opportunity for Houston’s young professionals to meet and discuss local issues with the City’s leaders.  Previous SOTC’s have yielded an overwhelming amount of success and have attracted such large crowds to the Houston Area Urban League (HAUL) building that HAULYP opted for a larger venue this year.

An auxiliary of the Houston Area Urban League, HAULYP represents a diverse cross-section of Houston's business community. Its members work with many of the Houston's top corporations, with 89 percent holding a bachelor's degree or higher. Top professions represented include finance, law, engineering, medicine and banking. Approximately six percent are small business owners. While the group's age range is 21 to 40, adults between ages 26 and 35 comprise the vast majority of its membership at 64 percent.

There are special entry reservations for select media and members of the press. To receive media credentials for HAULYP’s 6th Annual State of the City Forum, to schedule an interview with HAULYP’s President, Professional Development committee chair, or for any and all media/press inquiries, please contact Kelly King at 281.682.9503 or Kelly@thelivewireagency.com.
