PD Ports Is The Leading Voice On Portcentric Logistics
PD Ports senior representatives to speak at a number of high profile ports and logistics events
Added: 03/02/2010 - Toby Anderson

PD Ports, the owner and operator of Teesport in the North East, is leading the way in portcentric logistics as its senior representatives prepare to speak at a number of this year’s high profile ports and logistics events.

From early March senior representatives from PD Ports will be out in force, talking about the benefits of portcentric logistics as an effective means of improving supply chains.

At Teesport, the port operator has already achieved an excellent track record in helping businesses eradicate unnecessary road miles and significantly reduce their carbon footprints. With an extensive warehousing and wet bond facility at the Port of Felixstowe and port operations at Immingham on the River Humber, PD Ports is able to offer a diverse range of portcentric logistics solutions to customers.

Needless to say, PD Ports is proving popular with its customers and the company continues to win new business. Over the past three years, the port operator has attracted new business with ASDA and Tesco – both of which have established import centres at Teesport to serve their Northern UK markets.

Since January 2009, as part of its portcentric package, PD Ports has provided the platform for ASDA to save 1,265,459 road miles - enough to make almost three trips to the moon and back. The significant saving in road miles was achieved through the success of the Port’s Logical Link shipping service, which launched in January 2009. Logical Link is a coastal feeder container shipping service that offers a next day connection between Felixstowe and Teesport.

PD Ports has not only facilitated the leading retailers achieve success in improving their supply chain, it also strives to excel in providing portcentric solutions for its SME customers. Taylors of Harrogate, famous for its named products including the Yorkshire Tea brand and for its supply to the famous Bettys Tea Rooms is one of its recent success stories.

Richard Brewster, commodities shipping manager at Taylors of Harrogate said: "We have successfully worked together with PD Ports to find a solution to reduce the number of road miles used when transporting our goods to their final destination. By shipping our products direct to Teesport and storing them on-site prior to their final short leg journey to Harrogate, we will significantly reduce our carbon footprint and provide a more cost effective option for our business."

PD Ports is currently developing a business support service to assist the SME market in addressing their portcentric logistics requirements in the Teesport hinterland.

If you would like to know more about how PD Ports could help your business to improve its supply chain through portcentric logistics, you can come along and meet the team at this year’s Multimodal show at Birmingham NEC from 27 April - 29 April. PD Ports will be exhibiting at stand 610.

PD Ports senior representatives will be speaking about the benefits of port-based distribution centres at the Portcentric Logistics event being held at the Hilton Hotel, Manchester from 2 -3 March and at Containerisation International’s global shipping liner event on 12 April at the Radisson SAS Portman hotel, London.

About PD Ports:

PD Ports Limited is owned by Canadian based Brookfield. Brookfield is a global asset manager focused on property, renewable power and infrastructure assets, with over $90 billion of assets under management. PD Ports was bought by Brookfield in November 2009.

PD Ports is a high performing specialist ports business offering a wide variety of supply chain services to improve customers’ international product and material movements into and out of – as well as within – the UK.

PD Ports employs over 1140 members of staff, and generates an annual turnover of over £120 million from many UK locations.

PD Ports operates throughout the UK from bases at many key ports and logistics centres.

The 3 business interests of PD Ports are:

Port Operations– is split into two business streams – bulks and unitised and includes:
Teesport: one of the top 3 UK ports, with flows of containers, bulk traffics and finished cars, handling over 40 million tonnes of throughput p.a.

Humber & Small Ports: owners and/or operators of ports on the Humber estuary, Rivers Trent and Ouse, and at Medina Wharf, Isle of Wight. Service offerings include ships’ agency, chartering and stevedoring services.

Logistics: PD Logistics offers warehousing and distribution services at UK locations throughout the North East, Humberside & East Anglia, including at Felixstowe. Please visit www.pdlogistics.com
Development plans for Port Operations include:

The Northern Gateway Container Terminal: a major new deep sea container terminal planned at Teesport on the South side of the River Tees. The £300+ million development will have a capacity of 1.5 million TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit) and is anticipated to deliver over 5,500 jobs to the Tees Valley, when fully operational. Portcentric Logistics: a new concept promoted by PD Ports for locating the storage and distribution of imported goods close to the point of arrival at a UK port. This concept avoids the slow handling and return of empty containers as well as eradicating unnecessary UK road mileage, which occurs when delivering to a traditional inland import centre, such as in the Midlands.

In 2006 ASDA Wal*Mart opened a 360,000 sq ft import centre at Teesport and has saved more than 2 million road miles by adopting the portcentric concept. Adjacent to the ASDA facility, Tesco operates a purpose built 1.2 million sq ft import centre at Teesport, which opens in 2009

Conservancy – this includes:
Management of river traffic for the ports of Tees and Hartlepool, ensuring safe navigation and maintaining the required channel depth.

Property– this includes:
Revenue and income from property and facilities owned by PD Ports and used by third party clients on long term leases.
Land that is not utilised for operational purposes and offers potential for development.
Port land at Hartlepool docks, which is highly attractive to the growing renewable energy sector, including offshore, windfarms, and biomass plants. PD Ports’ long term strategy is to further develop Hartlepool docks as a centre of excellence for the offshore support sector.
